Team Happy – consisting of Ho Kun Xian (using Akuma), Leslie Cheong (using Sagat), and Tommy (using Chun) – earned the right to represent Singapore in Street Fighter IV at the TOUGEKI ’10 Super Battle Opera (SBO) fighting games tournament in September, after winning the SBO Singapore Qualifying Tournament yesterday night.
TOUGEKI is an annual Japanese fighting games tournament, widely considered to be one of the two most prestigious fighting games tournaments in the world, alongside the United States-based EVO Championship Series. TOUGEKI ’10 will be held in Japan on 16 September to 19 September.
Team Happy defeated Team Bets – whose members were Eng Ghim Khee “Gackt” (using Ryu), Dixon Pang (using Balrog), and Julius “Ganguro” Koh (using Sagat) – in a closely fought finals match that went down to the wire.
This year’s EVO2010 Championship Series will be taking place at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, and you can still spectate the action here in Singapore by tuning in to their live stream. The first pool of qualifiers is scheduled to start tonight at 12am (Singapore time).

I managed to get a good 15 minutes of time with Blizzard’s Global Manager for Community Develoment, Kevin Yu (aka “Karune”), to ask about Blizzard’s plans for StarCraft II in Singapore. Accompanying him was Associate Public Relations Manager Ryan Arbogast, who also contributed some tidbits. It was Kevin that did most of the talking though.
While I wasn’t able to get more information about the S$109 pricing for StarCraft II (“we have nothing further to announce”), there was plenty of very interesting information for competitive gamers.
First, is that there will be a dedicated Southeast Asia Battle.net server. Great news for those who are unhappy with the latency to either the US or Korea server currently available in the SC2 beta. The Southeast Asia server community will include Australia and New Zealand, making it more of an Oceanic server though. Unfortunately, you will only be able to play on the Southeast Asia server, which brings us to the next point…
Second, there will be regional ladders on Battle.net leading to a global finals at BlizzCon. At the end of each ladder season, the top Southeast Asia ladder players will compete against the top players from the other regions, with the finalists to be flown, at Blizzard’s expense, to BlizzCon. Hopefully, with Blizzard’s backing – and promised community events from SC2 distributors IAHGames – the SC2 standard game community in Singapore will continue to grow and sustain itself well into the future.
You can read the full interview transcript after the jump. It contains a lot more detail on the workings of the Southeast Asian Battle.net server and the Battle.net ladder/tournament system. And also some really interesting answers to random questions from our sister publication No Game No Talk’s Facebook page.
Wish I’d taken a photo of Kevin and Ryan for this post though… Silly me forgot all about it. Sigh.
When I started GameSync back in 2005, it was to provide fast and accurate news about the competitive gaming scene in Singapore. It was also to keep a record of history, so that newcomers and old faces alike could one day point back to a piece of news on GameSync and proudly say “Yes, I was a champion then” or “Yes, I did all these years ago”.
It would be an understatement to say that I’ve strayed far from this ideal with GameSync. But no more.
If you’re interested in reading news about the latest MMO or reviews on the latest Xbox360/PS3/iPhone game, GameSync is no longer the place for that. I’ve started No Game No Talk for all that.
From now on, GameSync will go back to our competitive gaming roots and focus on delivering the latest and greatest news, interviews and analysis from your favourite game communities. We’ll bring you insights from the pros about what makes them pros, and the things they do to keep themselves at the top.
With StarCraft II and the World Cyber Games coming soon, there’s no better time to refocus on what made GameSync a truly great read in the past.
It won’t happen overnight, but I hope you’ll continue to lend your support to our team at GameSync and keep on reading.
The wait is over. Blizzard has announced a 27 July release date for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, according to an official press release on the Blizzard website.
